Today’s weigh in

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

I weigh 209 pounds this morning. This is the first time I’ve weighed less than 210 pounds for at least 15 years. When I started BJJ last summer I weighed around 230. Last summer I was significantly stronger in terms of “One-Rep-Max” but my overall health and conditioning is much better now. I’ve been trying to roll with the big guys and blue belts during open mat but now that I’m so svelte I might have to start rolling with the ectomorphs. :-)

Today I rolled with Mike during free mat at HBJJ.  I was amazed at this guy’s endurance.  He rolled for about seven consecutive rounds each lasting seven minutes, with only one minute rest in between.  Throughout his mouth was closed and his breathing was controlled.  He never seemed to gas out and patiently worked his game against all comers.  At one point he carried on a casual side conversation while fending off a full frontal assault on his guard.  I was like, “WTF!  This guy is an animal.”  By comparison, after one seven minute round my legs were wobbly and a vein started to throb on my temple.  I thought I was going to have a frickin aneurysm.

I realized tonight I’ll never raise my game unless I increase my mat time.  Period. And I can’t increase my mat time unless I improve my conditioning.   So I need to get back to two-a-days and really get serious about losing the forty extra pounds that weigh me down on the mat.

Graphs

I added a couple of graphs to the sidebar. The top graph is my daily weigh-in. The bottom graph measures the total poundage from my kettlebell workout. The gigantic dip in poundage is due to the fact that I started taking two minute rests between rounds rather than three minute rests. When I work down to one minute rests, I think there will be another huge dip. I might add another graph to track how many flights of stairs I run during my other conditioning workout supposing I can actually find a flight of runnable stairs in LA.

219.2 lb

Waking Weight: 219.2

Breakfast: 4 cups coffee

Snack: 2 small bags of peanuts

Lunch: grilled fish burrito

Dinner: tandoori meat

Snack: 1 madeline pastry

On the whole, this was a bad food day. Laura and I went out for dinner and I had business lunch in Long Beach. At lunch I picked the fish out of the burrito and ate half the tortilla. I discarded a gigantic mound of rice and beans and guacamole and sour cream. At dinner I didn’t eat any of the basmati rice, opting instead to get a tandoori combination consisting of lamb, fish, chicken and a shrimp. I didn’t eat a single vegetable all day (intentionally) which is not good. The only good thing about my nutrition for the day is that I managed to avoid most carbs.
